What is Aikido?
Aikido has its origins in the centuries
old traditions of the Japanese martial arts. It is a form of budo (martial ways of
self refinement) – a way of life
that seeks to polish the self through a blend of physical training and mental discipline.
There
is no attack in Aikido. It is an art of self-defense against an unprovoked attack. Its
uniqueness as a martial art lies in its awareness of a deep sense of harmony with
all of creation. Therefore training is designed to defend not only the self, but
to bring the attacker under control without the necessity of inflicting injury. The techniques
of Aikido: deflection, control, and re-direction are characterized by a calm mind,
relaxed body, integrated breath, and harmonious extension and blending of natural,
positive energies. Movements are flowing and graceful. In practice, the motions of Aikido
reflect the ebbs and flows, the curves, waves, and spirals of nature.
Aikido Kokikai is an evolved style of Aikido that emphasizes “minimal effort for
maximum effect”. From our most natural & powerful position, we deliberately
choose the most gentle, most harmonious, most life-giving, and most EFFECTIVE resolution
of conflict. We view all challenge and conflict as an opportunity for deeper understanding,
connections, and growth as we apply the principles of Aikido to daily life.
Our San Tan Aikido dojo is dedicated to developing a strong family-oriented community
of dojo members who sincerely care about bringing out the best in themselves, their training
partners, and the dojo community. Our training style recognizes that everybody
has unique gifts and learning styles. Thus our instruction invites students to
experience Aikido at their pace through whichever learning style(s) best facilitates
their learning experience. We believe that the best way to learn is experience,
and that the best way to progress is to teach. So, all our students help each other. As
lifelong learners in pursuit of excellence, we are all simultaneously the eager student
and the facilitative teacher dedicated to furthering the art of Aikido.
People from a wide range of ages and physical abilities can benefit from Aikido training.
New students will see almost immediate improvements in balance, flexibility, and skill
progression. Improved effectiveness, efficiency, and agility of movement; both physically
and mentally, can be significant. Cardiovascular endurance, awareness, self-control,
self-confidence, and sense of community are other long-term benefits that students can
reap from Aikido practice. Because of Aikido's non-competitive, harmonious philosophy,
men, women, and children of all ages can train together in a mutually supportive atmosphere,
and at an energy level appropriate for each individual.
San Tan Aikido Kokikai joyfully cultivates a progressively deeper understanding and
appreciation of our Divine Nature. With our kaizen (continous development) approach,
we passionately synergize the Divine Potential within ourselves, our families, and our
global community in order to live and enjoy life to the fullest. Come dance with
us to the rhythms of life!
