Aikido vs. Karate

My goal in giving you this description is NOT to say that Aikido is better Karate.  It is simply to describe my biased experience of the type of interactions and the effects within each martial art, encourage you to do your due diligence and choose which best fits you at this stage of your journey.

Aikido Kokikai differs from typical “Karate” style martial arts in 3 major ways:  philosopy, physical demands and "Black Belt" programs.

 Karate  Aikido
  •  Attacks & Self-defense
  •  Pure self-defense.  No attacks.
  •  Interactions are harder, more rigid, and combative.
  •  Interactions are softer, more fluid, and more harmonious.
  •  More injuries, and injuries tend to be more serious.
  •  Less injuries, and injuries tend to be more minor.
  •  Competitive.  Tournaments which foster a win-lose mentality.
  •  Collaborative.  No tournaments or competition.  Win-win mentality.
  •   Physical demands are more suited to persons under the age of 35.
  •  Physically suitable for ages 4-60 and beyond to make significant and sustainable progress.
  • Black Belt programs, even with kids.
  •  Only adults can progress to black belt ranks, and no black belt programs.
